Matthieu Bourel

Matthieu Bourel’s (France, 1976) mesmerizing collages combine physical cut-and-paste techniques with digital editing. The artist describes his work as “Data-ism,” a pun on the avant-garde Dada movement that wielded montage and collage as a form of political critique. In addition to Dada artists like Hannah Höch and Max Ernst, Bourel’s inspirations include the Surrealists and Czech dissident artist Jirí Kolár. Bourel’s collages often appropriate images of classic Hollywood stars, which he deconstructs with dark irony.
